(Patricio, Patricius) [c. 390-461?] was born in Roman Britain toward the end of the 4th century. Kidnapped at the age of 16, he was sold into slavery in Ireland. Six years later he escaped. At home he resumed his education and was ordained as a priest. In fulfillment of his ardent desire, the Pope sent him back to Ireland as a missionary. St. Patrick is the apostle and principal patron of Ireland. He is also the patron of engineers and of Nigeria. His feast is March 17.
