(Benedictus, Benedetto, Benoit, Benito, Bento, Benedikt, Benet) [480-550], a young Roman nobleman, abandoned all possessions and worldly ambition in order more perfectly to seek and serve God. He is the father of Western Monasticism, patron of monks and nuns, and of all men and women who seek peace in work and prayer. He is the patron of speliologists (cave explorers), farmworkers, of poison sufferers and of Europe. His feast is July 11.
