You Can Support the Abbey
October 2023
Greetings of peace from Saint Andrew’s Abbey. As we enter the beautiful time of autumn and
approach the holiday season, I ask for God’s protection over you and your loved ones. May you
always remember His unwavering faithfulness even as you experience the changing of times and
seasons in your life.
It has been a rough year for many people, including for us at the Abbey, as the cost-of-living
continues to rise. While we do what we can within our own power to meet the challenges and
needs of each day, we also trust in God’s providence and promise: seek first the Kingdom of
God and all these things will be added unto you. (Mt. 6:33). In His wisdom, God created human
beings to be both independent and interdependent, (I Cor. 12), that no one should boast about
anything except in Him. (Gal 6:14). It is with this spiritual truth in mind that I come to you for
assistance.
With your help, I hope to accomplish the following with this appeal (1) finance the cost of care
of our senior monks who require round-the-clock care. This will allow us to continue to care for
them here at the monastery rather than at a facility. (2) refurbish our retreat rooms with new
mattresses and perform various upgrades. This project is long overdue. Pleasant comfortable
retreat rooms for our guests are an essential part of a fruitful retreat. (3) contribute to our ongoing
operational expenses. Costs have increased significantly, especially in our beautiful state of
California. Our property insurance premium has doubled from last year with less than half the
coverage. Some insurance companies, even Catholic ones, will no longer insure businesses in
California.
I realize not everyone who receives this appeal is able to give. However, if you are able to make
a donation to this appeal, I am very grateful. Please use the enclosed envelope. If it is easier,
you may also donate online at https://saintandrewsabbey.com/abbots-appeal-2023/ or call
661-944-2178. If you are unable to send a donation at this time, please know we would be very
grateful for your prayers, as we depend on them.
Thank you in advance for your kindness. Be assured of our daily prayers for you.
Sincerely in Christ,
Abbot Damien, OSB
