FR. LUKE has been a member of the monastic community at Saint Andrew's Abbey since May, 1980. He has served the monastery in the past as novicemaster and prior; he is presently juniormaster, librarian, and second cantor. He teaches marriage and human sexuality, bioethics, patristics, and the history of Christian spirituality at Saint John's Seminary in Camarillo. He also serves as adjunct faculty and teaches: monastic formation at the School of Theology of Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota; and the history of Christian spirituality at Loyola-Marymount University.
PRIOR to joining the monastery he trained as a physician.He completed a residency in family practice at the UCLA-affiliate program in Lancaster, California in 1981. He was board-certified in family practice in 1981 and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. He serves as chair of the bioethics committee at the Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center in Lancaster, where he is a member of the medical staff.
FR. LUKEhas published a translation of the Rule of Benedict, as well as articles on Evagrius Ponticus, lectio divina, Christian contemplative practices, and other subjects in monastic spirituality. His book Psalmody and Prayer in the Writings of Evagrius Ponticus was published in 2004.
